Plastic Zero visited Ökokauf in Vienna

Updated last: 17 January 2014

On December 3rd 2013 City of Malmö and City of Copenhagen visited ÖkoKauf Wien (EcoBuy Vienna) on behalf of Plastic Zero.

Initiated as a pioneer program for Green Public Procurements (GPP) ÖkoKauf Wien was formed in back in 1998   with voluntary eco-criteria for 10 different product groups. Today ÖkoKauf consists of 25 working groups each responsible for an area of products and services, a consultative committee on law and one on public relations. With a budget of 5 billion euro a year and a broad range of criteria, which are now mandatory for all departments of the Vienna City Administration, ÖkoKauf Wien has a great influence on environmental performance from the markets. The ÖkoKauf criteria have also been harmonized to different parts of Austria and a couple of German cities. The Ministry of environment in Austria has likewise adopted 50 % of the ÖkoKauf criteria.

We were kindly hosted by five experts from ÖkoKauf who explained their process of developing and setting new criteria and their experiences from almost 15 years of progressive work with GPP. They also shared with us some interesting cases including plastic related and waste preventive criteria. We are specifically inspired by ÖkoKauf Vienna's' way of defining new GPP criteria and securing legal compliance.

A warm thanks to our hosts for a very informative and inspiring meeting.
